Cardiovascular - connected with the heart and blood vessels (arteries,
veins, and capillaries) or the circulatory system.

Food Additive - generally, any natural of synthetic ingredient added to food. Under the FFDCA (Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act), the term `food additive` is used to describe "any substance the intended use of which results or may reasonably be expected to result directly or indirectly in its becoming a component or otherwise affecting the characteristics of any food". This definition covers any ingredient used in any part of the food supply chain (manufacture, processing, treatment, logistics, or storage). Algin - an organic compound which is extracted from brown algae (including kelp) and used as an emulsifying agent in puddings, milk shakes, and ice cream in order to add volume and texture to these popular foods and in order to provide longer shelf life.

Diabetes Mellitus - a metabolic disease that is caused by the body`s inability to use glucose (blood sugar) properly. Blood glucose levels are regulated through the action of insulin, a hormone in the body that helps move glucose (sugar) from the blood to muscles and other tissues. Diabetes arises when the pancreas fails to produce insulin or when the body cannot respond properly to the insulin that the pancreas secretes. There are 2 major types of diabetes mellitus - type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Sugars - the subunits of simple and complex sugars which can be metabolized by the body to generate energy. While most people have a direct mental link between sweetness and sucrose (table sugar), sucrose is merely one kind of sugar that provides this taste. Fruits are natural sources of simple sugars like glucose and fructose; additional foods contain sugars, like high fructose corn syrup, and honey, that are blends of fructose and glucose. An additional simple sugar found in milk, called lactose, is a combination of glucose and galactose (another simple sugar). All sugars are carbohydrates containing 4 calories per gram, and all carbohydrates comprise of one or more molecules of simple sugar. After digestion, sugars are carried by the bloodstream to the cells and tissues of the body, where they are used as the body`s major fuel source, to help metabolize fat, convert food sources into proteins, or keep them as body reserves to be used when needed. Sugars make a far larger contribution than merely providing foods with a sweet flavor. They also provide exclusive functional attributes, like texture and browning and also add to the pleasure of eating a healthful diet. Although today`s consumer has the choice of a wide variety of sugars - white sugar, raw sugar, turbinado sugar (cane sugar that retains the natural molasses found in the sugar crystals), brown sugar (granulated sugar that is combined with molasses in varying quantities to yield golden, light, or dark brown sugar, with crystals varying from coarse to finely granulated), corn syrup, honey - there is no notable distinction in the amount of nutritive calories each provides, and therefore no advantage of any one variety, in terms of degree of nutrition, over any other variety. Furthermore, there is a lack of scientific verification that the body can distinguish between organic sugars or sugar additives in food products.

Cystitis - urinary tract infection.

Crustacean - any of the various aquatic arthropods, which include lobsters, crabs, shrimps, and barnacles. They are characterized by segmented bodies, crusty exoskeletons and paired and jointed appendages on each body segment.

Blood Glucose - also known as blood sugar, refers to the sugar that is found in the bloodstream.

Glycogen - the principle reserve polysaccharide (form of storing) of carbohydrate energy (glucose) that is not used as fuel by body cells and is stored in muscles and in the liver. The body`s muscle mass appears to be fuller when glycogen levels are greater. Vegetarians - a broad expression used to describe individuals who exclude meat, poultry, fish, or other animal-derived foods from their diet. Ovo-vegetarians include eggs (and egg products) in their diet of vegetables, and an ovo-lacto-vegetarian will add milk to this regime. Since there is no known vegetable that has every one of the essential amino acids but these amino acids are present in eggs, a diet that includes eggs safeguards the body against lack of essential amino acids. Based on the findings of the Vegetarian Resource Group, under 1% of Americans are authentic vegetarians.

Herbicides - a special class of chemical plant-killers utilized to prevent the growth of weeds on agricultural farms and in forests, as well as for non-agricultural purposes, such as on golf courses, public tracts of land and household yards.

Gene - a structural unit of the genetic material, which forms the physical building block responsible for the passing on of the characteristics of individual life forms from generation to generation. The elementary hereditary material is fundamentally the same in every living organism; it is comprised of chain-like macromolecules of nucleotides -- DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in most life forms and RNA (ribonucleic acid) in some viruses -- and is characteristically associated in the form of a long, thread-like arrangement that (partly) constitutes a chromosome. Retinopathy - disease of the retina (the back of the eye that registers visual signals).

Proteinuria - excessive quantities of protein in urinary waste. This may be a sign of damage to the kidneys.

Generic Drug (Generic) - a drug whose patent has lapsed, hence enabling that drug to be manufactured as a non-branded bioequivalent by any pharmaceutical company. Phentermine (the weight-loss medication) is an example of a generic medicine.
